 Job description, responsibilities and duties

• offer assessment, counselling and support to students for a range of issues including academic concerns, friendship problems and bullying including cyber bullying, emotional issues arising from parental separation and divorce, bereavement, relationships with parents, self-harm and eating disorders, stress, anxiety and depression, and self-esteem
• use engagement techniques and communication strategies that are appropriate for the children/young people's developmental stage, culture and emotional needs
• be available for consultation with parents and staff with regard to any student about whom there may be concerns, whilst within the limit of client confidentiality
• provide appropriate feedback and follow-up to students’ parents, teachers, pastoral and support staff
• organize and administer the counselling service in conjunction with school staff, including implementing a robust system of referral to facilitate easy access to the service offered
• keep appropriate records of consultations in accordance with local data protection legislation
• work closely with the Learning Support team where appropriate to identify and address students’ specific needs
• act as a resource to school staff by offering insight into counselling and promoting the service where possible
• periodically provide training and information sessions to staff and/or parents on particular topics of interest regarding mental health and well-being e.g. managing issues of depression, anxiety and stress; bullying, developing resilience, working with third culture kids etc. 
• be willing to input into the Personal, Social and Health Educational curricular programs
• work closely with the Safeguarding Team on key child protection matters and individual children of concern
• guide families in referrals to external professionals, when required. Follow up such referrals to assist parents and students and to provide feedback to relevant staff
• coordinate with the University Guidance Counsellor student applications for Special Admission into University
• maintain and develop professional practice through regular and ongoing clinical supervision and training

 

Personality requirements and skills

• Univeristy Education in Counselling and / or Educational Psychology;

• At lest 5 years of experience in working with children on a similar position;

• Training in Childhood behavior and developmental Issues;
• A genuine pastoral concern for young people;
• Good working knowledge of the development (physiological, psychological and emotional) of young people and adolescents;
• Range of emotional intelligence and experience that builds trust with students and parents, as required;
• Be energetic and prepared to go that extra mile in shaping a new counselling service within the school;
• Have a genuine interest in understanding cultural diversity;
• Relevant experience in school counselling services;
• Ability to allay anxieties and fears and show empathy;
• Knowledge of Special Educational Needs;
• The ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) to a variety of audiences;
